Pre-employment polygraph tests: what questions are asked and how does a lie detector protect a business?
Internal risks are one of the main causes of companies’ financial losses. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE, 2024 report) estimates that organisations lose about 5% of their revenue each year to fraud by their own employees: theft, “kickbacks”, information leaks and abuse of authority.
Need a test rather than theory? Take the VerifEye online test — from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50), no office visit — or calculate the cost of a polygraph test.
That is why a pre-employment polygraph test has long ceased to be something exotic and has become a standard tool of corporate security. Lie detector screening of staff makes it possible to identify risks before a candidate gains access to money, data or management decisions.
Why a business needs a polygraph
Polygraph testing of candidates solves several critically important tasks at once:
- uncovering hidden motives for seeking the job;
- verifying the accuracy of the CV and personal history;
- reducing the risks of theft, fraud and “kickbacks”;
- protection against industrial espionage;
- increasing the overall loyalty of staff.
A polygraph is not a replacement for the HR interview but its logical continuation. It makes it possible to check what cannot be seen during an interview: intentions, hidden facts and past experience that the candidate would rather not talk about.
What questions are asked in a pre-employment polygraph test
The test questions are not chosen at random. They are drawn up individually, depending on the position, the level of responsibility and the specifics of the business. All wording is discussed in advance and calls for an unambiguous “yes” or “no” answer.
Block 1: Honesty and personal history
This block is aimed at checking the truthfulness of the information provided by the candidate.
Sample questions:
- Have you knowingly included false information about your experience or education in your CV?
- Have you concealed the real reasons why you left previous jobs?
- Have you used forged diplomas or certificates?
Block 2: Offences and criminal risks
Even if a criminal record has been expunged or a case never reached a verdict, the risks to the business remain.
Sample questions:
- Have you committed theft or fraud at previous workplaces?
- Do you have ties to criminal organisations?
- Have you taken part in illegal schemes that you did not report to your employer?
Block 3: Financial risks and “kickbacks”
One of the most important blocks for management and finance positions and for posts that carry liability for money or goods.
Sample questions:
- Have you received undeclared income (“kickbacks”, hidden commissions)?
- Do you plan to use your position for personal gain?
- Do you have significant debts that you have not disclosed?
Block 4: Addictions
Addictions directly affect an employee’s reliability and create a risk of blackmail.
Sample questions:
- Have you used drugs in the past year?
- Do you have problems with gambling or alcohol?
- Have you concealed such facts when you were hired for previous jobs?

The “golden” list of questions for corporate screening
Below is an example of a universal list that is often used in B2B screening:
- Have you included false information about your experience or education in your CV?
- Have you received “kickbacks” or unofficial income in previous jobs?
- Have you stolen property or money from an employer?
- Do you have significant debts that you have not disclosed?
- Do you plan to pass the company’s confidential information on to third parties?
- Have you used working time and company resources to run your own business?
- Have you used drugs in the past year?
- Have you been dismissed for breaches of discipline or financial misconduct?
Legal aspects: is it legal in Ukraine
Yes, a polygraph test is legal, provided that the key requirements are met:
- the candidate’s voluntary written consent;
- a clear explanation of the purpose of the test;
- no questions that degrade a person’s honour and dignity;
- use of the results solely within the employment relationship.
A polygraph does not break the law if it is used as a risk assessment tool rather than as the sole criterion for hiring.
How corporate staff screening works
- A request from the company and an analysis of the risks of the position
- Drawing up an individual list of questions
- The pre-test interview with the candidate
- Polygraph testing
- An analytical report for the client
The result is a clear conclusion about the level of risk, not an emotional or subjective assessment.
How effective screening is: figures and facts
- some candidates turn out to be high-risk as early as the screening stage;
- a single test can save a business hundreds of thousands or even millions of hryvnias;
- staff turnover and the number of internal investigations go down.
HR interview vs polygraph or EyeDetect
| Criterion | HR interview | Polygraph |
|---|---|---|
| Objectivity | low | 85–89% |
| Checking intentions | ❌ | ✅ |
| Detecting hidden risks | ❌ | ✅ |
| Documented conclusion | ❌ | ✅ |
Conclusion
A pre-employment polygraph test is neither an interrogation nor a sign of distrust but an effective filter for building a reliable team.
It allows a business to make decisions based on facts rather than intuition, reducing risks even before the employment contract is signed.
While corporate screening is a matter of business security, personal situations — for example, lie detector questions in an infidelity test — call for a completely different, more delicate approach.
