“Do you have a lie detector? I want to know who I’m hiring and whether they WILL steal”

A polygraph CANNOT predict people’s future behavioural tendencies with high accuracy, because they depend on many factors. BUT we can offer employers a few recommendations that will help reduce the risk of theft in the workplace.

Give a prospective employee a thorough lie detector test BEFORE hiring, covering these topics:

Need an actual test rather than theory? Take the VerifEye online test — from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50), with no office visit, or calculate the cost of a polygraph test.

• – a criminal record, crimes committed that the police never solved
• – past theft (from childhood onwards and at previous jobs)
• – deceiving an employer through various schemes (kickbacks, bribes, fraud)
• – find out whether the employee has been sent by competitors or government agencies

Introduce a zero-tolerance policy on theft at work:

• – include in the employment contract the procedures that will apply if theft is discovered (fines, reputational risks)
• – motivate other employees to expose colleagues’ misconduct (security staff most often use compromising material)

• – carry out regular audits, document checks and reconciliation of inventory records.
• – give your employees competitive pay and social benefits
• – it is worth analysing the reasons that may push employees to steal and introducing preventive measures to reduce the risks.

And remember: investigating theft is much more expensive than preventing it. So use the polygraph to find out whether a candidate has stolen from previous employers.
