Polygraph test: how does it work?
A polygraph test, also known as a lie detector, is a method of detecting lies that measures changes in a person’s physiological indicators, such as heart rate, breathing and sweating. During a polygraph test, the person is asked a series of questions that they must answer truthfully. The polygraph examiner records the physiological reactions and analyses them to determine where the person is being deceptive.
The polygraph test is a method of detecting lies with a fairly high level of effectiveness. Polygraph tests are often used in business to check the reliability of employees, and by law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes.
How is a polygraph test conducted?
A polygraph test is conducted in a specially equipped room. The examinee sits in a chair wearing special sensors, which do no harm to health.
The examiner then asks the examinee a series of questions, which they must answer truthfully. The questions may concern various aspects of the examinee’s life, such as their work, family, friends and hobbies.
The examiner analyses the examinee’s physiological reactions and determines whether they are answering the questions truthfully or not. If the examinee finds it hard to answer a question, the examiner may ask them to repeat the answer.
Is a polygraph test effective?
A polygraph test has a fairly high level of effectiveness, but it is not 100% accurate: 85–89% according to the American Polygraph Association meta-analysis (2011). The effectiveness of the polygraph depends on many factors, such as the examiner’s experience, the examinee’s state of health and their ability to control their physiological reactions.
Can a polygraph test be fooled?
People do try: some take sedatives, others try to control their breathing or tense their muscles.
None of these is a reliable method: such attempts usually show up on the charts and the motion sensor, and the examiner notes them in the conclusion.
Is a polygraph test safe?
A polygraph test is a safe method of examination. The electrodes used to record physiological reactions are not harmful to health.
However, some people may feel discomfort during a polygraph test. This is because the test can be long and nerve-racking.
Should you take a polygraph test?
The decision whether to take a polygraph test is a personal one. Before you decide, you should weigh up all the pros and cons.
If you are worried about your safety or reputation, a polygraph test can be a good way of protecting yourself. However, if you are guilty, a polygraph test may be a waste of time and money.
If you have decided to take a polygraph test, it is important to prepare for it. You should know your rights and obligations during the test well. You should also know what questions you may be asked.
During the test, it is important to answer the questions truthfully and honestly. If you lie, the polygraph examiner will be able to detect it.
A polygraph test is a complex method of examination that cannot be regarded as a 100% guarantee of detecting lies. However, if the test is conducted by an experienced polygraph examiner, it can be a useful tool for detecting lies.
