Thousands of people search for “online lie detector” every month. Some are looking for a joke game, some for a quick truth test, and some for a real test when a relationship, a business or an important decision is at stake.
The professional name for a lie detector is a polygraph. That is why many users also search for “online polygraph” without fully understanding what of all this really exists and what is merely an imitation.
This article gives an honest answer:
whether an online lie detector is actually possible;
which technologies really work;
how they differ from online games;
and where it makes sense to order a serious lie detector test rather than a simulator.
How a lie detector works: briefly and to the point
“Lie detector” is the popular name.
Polygraph is the scientific term.
A classic polygraph:
Need a test rather than theory? Take the online VerifEye test — from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50), no office visit needed — or calculate the cost of a polygraph test.
records physiological indicators (pulse, breathing, reactions);
works under a specialist’s control;
cannot be “online”, because it needs sensors and controlled conditions.
This is exactly where the main myth about the online polygraph comes from.
VerifEye — a real online lie detector from Converus
Let’s start with what really exists.
VerifEye is an online tool for testing truthfulness, developed by Converus, a world leader in lie detection.
How VerifEye works
VerifEye:
works through a smartphone camera;
analyses micro-movements of the eyes and cognitive load;
needs no physical sensors;
follows a standardised digital protocol.
🔑 The key point:
the result is produced by an algorithm, not by a person. 👉 That is why the result cannot be “bought”, changed or adjusted.
That is exactly why people often search for VerifEye as:
online lie detector
online polygraph
online truth test
online lie test
When VerifEye makes sense
VerifEye is suitable when:
you need a remote fidelity test;
speed matters;
you need objectivity without the human factor;
you need an initial or independent assessment of truthfulness.
❗ At the same time, VerifEye is not a forensic examination and does not replace a classic polygraph in complex cases.
StimulTest — online testing as an alternative to an “online polygraph”
The second real tool that is often called an “online lie detector” is StimulTest.
What StimulTest is
StimulTest is a system of online psychophysiological testing that analyses a person’s reactions to special stimuli (words).
It is used for:
online screening;
staff screening;
risk assessment;
preparing for a polygraph test.
How StimulTest differs from games
Unlike:
free online lie detectors;
voice-based lie detectors;
polygraph simulators;
joke apps,
StimulTest:
has a clear methodology;
does not work at random;
is used in real-life testing;
is an assessment tool, not entertainment.
Myths about the online polygraph and the “internet lie detector”
❌ Myth 1: there is a free online lie detector
In reality, these are games or random result generators.
❌ Myth 2: a voice-based lie detector can reveal the truth
Voice analysis without context and physiology is not a test.
❌ Myth 3: online test = polygraph
Online tools are a separate category, not a full replacement for the polygraph.
When an online test is enough and when you need a polygraph
Online (VerifEye or StimulTest)
initial testing;
remote format;
quick assessment of facts;
preliminary screening.
Classic polygraph
infidelity tests;
theft and fraud;
internal investigations;
legal and court cases.
👉 A professional approach means choosing the right tool!
Why people order a professional test rather than online games
People turn to serious services when:
assumptions are not enough;
they need facts, not entertainment;
the decision has consequences;
confidentiality, objectivity and SPEED matter.
That is why online games are no competition for professional solutions.
Conclusion: the whole truth about the “online lie detector”
Lie detector is the popular name.
Polygraph is the professional term.
An online polygraph does exist — as real digital solutions: VerifEye and StimulTest.
All other “online lie detectors” are games.
If you need a real test rather than a simulation —
choose serious technology and a professional approach.

What you need to take a test online
The barrier to entry is low, and that is exactly why the online format is pushing “game” lie detectors off the internet. To take the test, you need:
- A smartphone with a front camera — iOS or Android. No separate computer, sensors or cuffs are needed.
- A stable internet connection and 15–20 minutes of uninterrupted time.
- Even lighting on the face — the camera has to see the eyes. Backlighting from a window, a dark room or glasses with strong glare will not do.
- Quiet and no one else in the room: any distraction distorts the reactions.
The format does not rule out prescription glasses. Contact lenses, eye drops and medication that affects the pupils must be reported in advance — this determines whether the test will be valid.
How much does an online lie detector test cost?
- Online VerifEye test — from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50), depending on the number of questions.
- For those abroad — from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50) per test.
- Classic polygraph in Lviv — from 3,000 to 8,000 UAH (≈ €160).
- EyeDetect at the office in Lviv — from 5,500 UAH (≈ €110).
- Forensic psychophysiological examination — from 20,000 UAH (≈ €395).
The online format is cheaper not because it is “worse”, but because it involves no travel, no rented premises and no several hours of a specialist’s work. You pay for a specific answer to a specific question. The full list is on the prices page.
How to order an online test — step by step
- Describe your situation. We will find out whether your question can be checked instrumentally at all. The online format works with facts — “did you take”, “did you know”, “did you do” — not with feelings and intentions.
- We word the questions. This is the most important stage: whether the result is reliable depends on how precisely they are worded. We prepare them together with you.
- You receive a link and the app. Installation takes about two minutes; no registration is needed.
- You take the test. The person looks into the camera and answers the prepared questions. The polygraph examiner does not need to be present.
- You receive a PDF report. It is ready about 5 minutes after the test ends, with a conclusion for each question separately.
FAQ: online lie detector tests
Is there a free online lie detector that actually works?
No. Everything offered for free and without installation is an entertainment site that gives a random result or reacts to how fast you press buttons. Real technology requires calibration, prepared questions and data processing, and it cannot be free. The exception is a demo test in which you think of a number: we offer it precisely so that you can see the technology working on yourself.
How accurate is an online lie detector?
According to the developer, Converus, the accuracy of VerifEye technology is 84–89%. That is higher than a classic polygraph in the hands of an inexperienced operator, but lower than a competently conducted classic test. That is why the online test is chosen for a quick check of one or two key questions, not for a complex investigation.
Can you take an online lie detector test on a computer or in a browser?
No, you need a smartphone with the app. Browser “tests” that require no installation are not instrumental detection but an imitation. The smartphone camera records involuntary eye reactions that a person does not consciously control; an ordinary web page cannot do that.
Does a voice-based lie detector work?
Voice stress analysis (VSA) as a lie detection method has no proven scientific basis and is not used in expert practice. We do not work with it. If someone offers you a test “by voice over a messenger”, it is not a professional service.
How long does an online test take?
The test itself takes 10–25 minutes. Preparing the questions takes longer than taking the test, and it is the preparation that determines the quality of the result. The report arrives within a few minutes after the test is finished.
Can a person be tested without their knowledge?
No. The test cannot be carried out covertly: the person has to install the app, look into the camera and answer the questions. Besides, testing without voluntary consent is illegal, whatever the format.
Can you take an online test from abroad?
Yes, this is one of the main use cases. The format does not depend on the country or time zone — all you need is a smartphone and the internet. For people outside Ukraine, the online VerifEye test costs from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50).
Does a court accept the result of an online test?
A court needs a specialist’s conclusion based on a full examination — that is a separate service, the forensic psychophysiological examination. The online test gives you an answer for your own decision, but it cannot replace a forensic examination.
What if the result is doubtful or the person disagrees with it?
The online test can be repeated, or you can move on to a classic polygraph — it gives a more detailed result and is the method used when the cost of a mistake is high. We always tell you plainly when the online format is not enough for your situation.
