Not on its own. For court, a forensic psychophysiological examination by a certified forensic expert is needed. The court weighs its conclusion together with the other evidence — it has no predetermined weight.
Can you beat a polygraph with special techniques?
Attempts at countermeasures are recorded separately: deliberate changes in breathing, muscle tension or taking a sedative change the pattern of reactions in a way that is visible on the chart. Detected countermeasures are in themselves a significant test result.
What if I am very nervous?
Nervousness before a test is a normal reaction that almost everyone has. The method is designed to distinguish general nervousness from a reaction to a specific significant question. Besides, you know all the questions in advance — there are no surprises during the test.
