Can you fool a polygraph — myths and the truth
The polygraph remains one of the most effective tools for detecting untruths. That is why one of the most frequent questions clients ask is: “Can a polygraph be fooled?”
Need a test, not theory? Take the VerifEye online test — from 2,500 UAH (≈ €50), without visiting the office — or calculate the cost of a polygraph test.
In this article I, polygraph examiner Andriy Maryniak, will explain in simple terms what is true and what is a myth long since disproved by practice.
Myth 1. Just stay calm and the polygraph will show nothing
No.
Even if a person looks calm on the outside, their body gives off micro-signals:
- changes in breathing rhythm
- fluctuations in pulse
- micro-sweating
- small muscle movements
No one can control all these indicators at the same time, and a modern polygraph records them with high precision.
Myth 2. You can deliberately “confuse” the examiner
This is also untrue.
An experienced specialist immediately notices:
- breath-holding
- artificial muscle tension
- attempts to divert attention
- manipulation of the rhythm of answers
- unnatural pauses
Such actions do not help to “fool” the polygraph — they only make the result worse for the examinee.
Myth 3. Alcohol, pills or energy drinks help you pass the test
On the contrary — they worsen the readings, cause chaotic reactions and are immediately picked up by the polygraph as an external influence.
Besides, testing is not carried out under the influence of medication or alcohol — this is the standard of international protocols.
Myth 4. If you truly believe your lie, the polygraph won’t tell the difference
The polygraph does not analyse “thoughts” or “beliefs”.
It analyses physiology, which does not depend on fantasies or self-deception.
The body reacts not to words, but to:
- fear of exposure
- cognitive conflict
- inner tension
- emotional avoidance
You cannot “out-lie” this.
Myth 5. There are “life hacks” from the internet — squeeze your fingers, bite your tongue, think about painful things
This is the most common myth.
Such “tips” result in:
- characteristic “spikes” on the charts
- destabilised baselines
- sharp artefacts that are immediately visible
An experienced polygraph examiner usually spots such “participants” in the very first recordings.

Why fooling a polygraph is practically impossible
The complexity of reactions
The polygraph measures a set of indicators that cannot be controlled simultaneously.
Analysis algorithms
The software analyses all channels at once — breathing, skin response, pulse and blood pressure, body movement. A person cannot influence all of them at the same time.
The examiner’s work
The polygraph examiner sees not only the charts but also psychophysiological behaviour. Even before the test, the specialist assesses:
- breathing patterns
- the way the person answers
- micro-movements
- body tension
- the specifics of their reactions
Attempts at deception are a reaction too
Attempts to influence the result are in themselves an abnormal reaction and are also recorded by the software.
The truth: there is no reliable way to fool a polygraph, but you can harm yourself
Attempts to “trick” the polygraph lead to:
- “uneven” charts
- no possibility of a correct analysis
- a conclusion of “attempted influence / attempted deception”
- a complete loss of trust
This is worse than simply telling the truth.
What to do to pass a polygraph test successfully
I always advise:
- get a good night’s sleep before the test
- do not take alcohol, energy drinks or sedatives unless agreed in advance
- listen carefully to the instructions
- calmly answer “yes” / “no”
- do not try to manipulate your state
That way the result will be accurate and honest.
Conclusion
A polygraph is a scientific instrument that works at the level of physiology. Fooling it reliably is practically impossible: countermeasures usually show up on the charts. At the same time, no method is 100% accurate — polygraph accuracy is 85–89% (American Polygraph Association meta-analysis, 2011).
In the hands of a professional, the polygraph is one of the most reliable ways to establish the truth.
